How are letters processed at the India post office?

The Indian post office should include letters not in roll form in envelopes of the following
dimensions unless they exceed 353 x 250 mm, namely:-

  1. 140 x 90 mm
  2. 152 x 90 mm
  3. 220 x 110mm
  4. 176 x 125mm
  5. 229 x 162mm
  6. 353 x 250mm 7. 324 x 229mm
    With a +-2 mm tolerance
    • These dimensions do not apply to correspondence transmitted to or received from any
      other nation.
    • All envelopes must have a flap at the top of the longer side, not on either side.
    • Envelopes should be constructed of the following thickness of paper:
      0.08mm (minimum), 0.18mm (maximum)
    • The envelope’s surface should be flat and homogeneous in structure.
      The Director-General may prescribe that any letter bearing a defined nature and directed to
      such locations as the Director-General may specify should be accompanied by a statement
      in such form as the Director-General may prescribe.

Always be sure to enter a complete and accurate address to get your package there as

Put it in the proper spot.
On the front side of an envelope, write the recipient’s address, and on the reverse side, write
the address of the sender.

Make it as simple to read as possible.
If you’re printing or typing with a pen, make sure the address is readable from an arm’s
length away. Avoid the use of periods, commas, and other punctuation marks.
How to correctly address an envelope

  • You should place the recipient’s address on the front side of the envelope, and you should write the sender’s address on the reverse side of the envelope. You must maintain a minimum of 15mm of blank space on the left, bottom, and right sides of the envelope.
  • You may put the logo and name of the sender’s firm on the top left corner, and stamps or frank impressions can be placed on the top right corner, with a space of at least 10mm between the address block of the receiver and the top left corner.
  • The top of the address block of the addressee must have a minimum spacing of 40 mm.
  • Stamps or Frank imprints must adhere to a surface with a maximum area of 74 mm.
  • 15 mm of space should be allowed at the bottom of the envelope for bar code printing, and there should be 5mm of the area surrounding the 2D barcode.
  • The sender’s logo should not be more than 25 x 50 mm in size, and the 2D barcode should be no less than 18 x 18 mm in size.
  • The length and width of the printed bar code and the width of the silent zone should be restricted to a minimum of 60 mm in size and 10 mm in width in the window of the envelope and they should be visible.
  • If the advertising is printed on a privately made envelope or an inland letter card, you must maintain a silent zone of at least 10 mm on both sides of the address block at all times.

Mail Services

Among its many responsibilities is the collecting and processing of mail and the transmission
and delivery of mail. All postal items whose contents are like a message may be categorized
as mail, including letters, postcards, inland letter cards, packets, ordinary, registered,
insured, value-payable goods, and speed post, among other articles.
Mail is further divided into two categories: first-class mail and second-class mail. First-class
mail is delivered free of charge through air transmission inside India; however, second-class
mail is sent via airlift only if prepaid with an air fee.

Mail Product

The post office’s principal role is to collect, process, transmit and deliver mail. Mails include
all postal objects whose contents are in the form of messages, including letters, postcards,
inland letter cards, packages, ordinary, registered, insured, value payable, and speed post.
There are two kinds of mail: first class and second class. Within India, first-class mail is
transported free by airmail; second-class mail is sent only if purchased with an air fee. These
four steps of postal operation have a single purpose: to deliver mail to its intended recipient.
